Dear Kasigluk-Akiuk Families:

I would like to begin by thanking you for your patience and understanding as faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to open the school after a difficult summer of transition and change.  I hope you and your child(ren) are relaxed, recharged and ready to start a new school year. I am so delighted to have been chosen to lead your amazing learning community. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your child(ren).

All signs point to an incredible school year. Akiuk’s skilled and devoted staff have already been planning and preparing for your child(ren). The enthusiastic office team is registering new students, gathering supply orders for needed materials and updating student files. Our hard working and conscientious custodians have spent the summer cleaning and sanitizing the facility. And, our ASB has been providing strength and encouragement to us all.  This is indeed a joyous and caring community with the common goals of nurturing responsible, caring students and promoting high-level learning.

New Staff
Each year brings positive change. This includes a few additions to our faculty. We are delighted to welcome Ms. Louraine Pascua, our 5-6 Generalist and Mr. Thomas Marcotte, our 7-12 Social Studies/Science Educator.  Please warmly welcome Ms. Louraine and Mr. Marcotte to the Akiuk Family. I would be remiss if I didn’t add myself, Ms. Brown, your new Site Administrator/Principal.

Facilities Update
If you came to or walked past the school, the aftermath of the fire is very present.  Currently, the focus has been on updating fire/alarm systems, re-supplying all areas with fire extinguishers and planning for the removal of the SA housing unit.  Teacher housing is under renovation for the teachers displaced due to the fire and all onsight school facilities have been slowly updated.  COVID precautions are still in effect as we have sanitizing and preventative gear on hand for faculty, staff and students.  The process of recovery has been slow and steady. I thank you all for your continued patience and support.

Student Placement
A great deal of time, effort and thought has gone into the process of student placement and course choices for the 2022-23 school year. Thank you so much for being positive with your child (ren), we received many remote assignments ahead of school opening on Monday.  The level of excitement to learn from Akiuk children and their families is unmatched.   Your commitment ensures that Akiuk Memorial School will be a celebrated and successful school. And that is awe-inspiring.  I eagerly look forward to greeting students and families. It remains an honor and privilege to serve as your SA/Principal.  Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for our Grizzlies.

Warmest Regards,

Ms. G. Brown, Principal
